Spicy Short Ribs Smothered with Red Gravy

  • 6 pound beef short ribs
  • 1 pinch salt, plus more for seasoning, divided
  • 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper, plus more for seasoning, divided
  • 1 teaspoon liquid crab boil
  • 14 ounce ketchup
  • 12 ounce light beer
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Creole or whole grain mustard
  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
  • 0.5 cup chopped onions
  • 0.25 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 dash hot pepper sauce
  • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pinch ground cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon peeled & grated fresh ginger


  1. Season the ribs with the salt and black pepper. Place the ribs in a 4 ½-qt. Dutch oven.
  2. Combine the crab boil, ketchup, beef, mustard, garlic, onions, brown sugar, hot pepper sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ground cayenne pepper, ginger, 1 pinch salt, and 1 pinch black pepper in a food processor. Process until smooth (about 15 secs.). Use a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides.
  3. Pour the mixture over the ribs and cover the Dutch oven. Slide the Pizza Rack into Shelf Position 6. Place the Dutch oven on the Pizza Rack. Select the Slow Cook setting (225° F/107° C). Set the cooking time to 8 hrs. Press the Start Button to begin the cooking cycle. When the cooking process is complete, serve the ribs with the sauce.
